CHAPEL RENOVATION
Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA

The renovation of Chapel 2 on the Vandenberg Air Force Base included a complete interior refurbishment and an addition to house accessible restrooms. After many years of “temporary” fixes, the facility had become cluttered and had an overall drab feeling.
The completion of the project resulted in a facility with greatly improved aesthetics as well as improved overall functionality. Interior finishes were either replaced or refinished. A new sound system was installed and integrated into the design with a decorative wood grill which concealed the sound equipment and helped unify the Chancel area visually. Acoustical and lighting improvements were included enhancing the overall feel of the space. Sun control was provided at the windows and the reconfiguration of support spaces improved the functionality of the facility. The building was brought up to meet current accessibility codes and the solutions were sensitively planned to help preserve the historic character of the building.

Project Completion: January 1999

Received a National Design Award from the Strategic Air Command, Washington DC.
