Meet Jason Conner
Jason Conner is an Associate Principal at KBZ Architects. Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Jason developed an interest in architecture at an early age through a love of drawing and building with Legos.
Encouraged by his parents to pursue architecture as a career, he took drafting classes in high school before studying architectural drafting at Santa Barbara City College. He later earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 2007.
Following graduation, Jason worked for internationally renowned architect Frank Gehry in Los Angeles before returning to his hometown to join KBZ Architects. Since 2013, he has contributed to a wide range of educational projects throughout the Central Coast, helping create spaces that support students, educators, and local communities.
What led you to pursue a career in architecture?
As a kid, I enjoyed playing with Legos and drawing abstract art. My parents always encouraged me to pursue architecture as a career, and I became interested in the endless possibilities of creativity that architecture offers. In high school, I took drafting classes and was fascinated by the process of taking an idea on paper and turning it into something real.
What drew you to KBZ Architects?
While I was in college, one of my professors recommended that I apply for an internship at KBZ because Santa Barbara was my hometown, and they thought the firm would be a great fit. After graduating, I moved to Los Angeles and worked for Frank Gehry. After several years, I knew I wanted to return home. I have always been interested in how architecture and design can improve educational environments, and KBZ has a long history of working with schools and public agencies throughout the region. In 2013, I reached out to Joe Wilcox and joined the firm. I've been here ever since.
What types of projects do you most enjoy working on?
The West Campus Center at Santa Barbara City College remains one of my favorite projects. It was the first project I worked on at KBZ, and I had the opportunity to be involved from the early conceptual stages through construction and completion. Having attended Santa Barbara City College myself, it was especially rewarding to be part of the team creating a new facility that would benefit future students and faculty.
What is your favorite part of a project?
The conceptual and schematic design phases are the most enjoyable for me. At the beginning of a project, there are so many possibilities to explore, and it's exciting to see ideas evolve through the design process. Some of the best ideas emerge when you least expect them.
How has your work positively impacted the communities you serve?
Most of the projects I have worked on have been educational facilities. There is no greater feeling than knowing students and faculty can learn and work in spaces that are safe, functional, and thoughtfully designed. It's rewarding to be part of projects that will serve the community for many years to come.
What have you learned during your time at KBZ?
Working at KBZ has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Over the years, I have learned a tremendous amount from colleagues, consultants, and clients. One of the most important lessons has been the value of communication. When ideas are communicated clearly, respectfully, and effectively, the design and construction process becomes much more successful and enjoyable for everyone involved.
Why are you excited to be part of the KBZ team?
